County Health Rankings

Marin County has been ranked the #1 Healthiest County in California, according to the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation (RWJF) and the University of Wisconsin Population Health Institute (UWPHI).

Marin residents should be proud to reach number #1 in 3 out of 6 main categories:

  • Lowest in Mortality
  • Best in Clinical Care
  • Best in Physical Environment

While overall Marin is ranked well the last two years, the rankings show us several areas where Marin needs improvement.

Binge Drinking

Marin ranked poorly in excessive alcohol consumption. We have the highest rate amongst California counties.

Marin has a high percentage of adults who drink and binge drink and what’s more Marin has high rates of teens that have used alcohol.

Gaps between the Rich and Poor

Marin ranks second to last in income inequality.

Income inequality:

  • Affects how communities invest in health and well-being of individuals
  • Affects how individuals perceive both their status within and in connection to the community
  • Can create spatial segregation in residence along both racial/ethnic and economic lines
  • Spatial isolation of wealthy from poor results in selective abandonment of poor and racial/ethnic minority neighborhoods
  • Affects life expectancy. People living in areas of wealth are more likely to live longer, while people living in areas with less income and wealth are likely to live shorter

Health Is Everyone’s Business

Most of what influences our health is located outside the doctor’s office –home, work and community environments profoundly shape our behaviors and lifestyles. To achieve a healthy community, it is imperative that we work together to create policies, programs and practices that promote health and safety for all.
