Baldacci, David. Absolute
Power (2000) An inebriated President and his mistress begin to
fight with knives; the Secret Service intervenes, resulting in the death
of the mistress. All witnesses must be silenced in order to prevent a
scandal...
Byrd, Max. Grant
(2000) An historical novel about Ulysses S. Grant's failed attempt to
win a third Presidential term. Author Byrd portrays Grant as quiet, often
drunk, and seemingly at ease only around his close friend Mark Twain.
Chafets, Ze'ev. The
Project (1997) Dewey Goldberg, the first Jewish President of the
United States, faces opposition from Elihu Barzel, Israel's Prime
Minister, in this novel written by an Israeli government press officer and
journalist.
DeLillo, Don. Libra
(1988) The assassination of John F. Kennedy, told from the perspective
of Lee Harvey Oswald.
Ehrlich, Everett M. Big
Government (1998) Political satire from a former member of the
Clinton administration, featuring Wade Hoak, a Republication President who
resigns after three years in office, and takes with him $50 million from
business associates.
Greenfield, Jeff. People's
Choice (1995) The President-elect dies shortly after his narrow
victory. And as the electoral college prepares to vote for a new
President, a cast of characters emerges from the media frenzy. Written by
a political and media analyst for newspaper and television.
Grippando, James. The
Abduction (1998) Eight years before running for President, Attorney
General Allison Leahy's daughter had been abducted. And now her opponent,
Lincoln Howe, faces a similar crisis-- his granddaughter is kidnapped. At
the risk of losing the campaign, Leahy decides to try to catch the
kidnappers.
Higgins, Jack. The
President's Daughter (1997) In this thriller, the President's
illegitimate daughter is kidnapped by Israeli terrorists, who demand that
the President attack several Arab countries in exchange for her safe
return.
Kilian, Michael. Major
Washington (1998) This novel focuses on the young George
Washington, before he became President. George's early adventures include
fighting in the French and Indian War, and having an affair with the wife
of his best friend.
Maxwell, Mark. Nixoncarver
(1998) Ex-President Richard Nixon and short-story writer Raymond
Carver become fast friends after meeting on a California beach. Together
they fish, play poker, and share the intimate details of each of their
lives.
McGrory, Brian. The
Incumbent (2000) This thriller, written by a Washington journalist,
features an assassination attempt on a President running for re-election,
and the efforts of a journalist (also injured during the attempt) to find
the guilty person.
Nevin, David. Eagle's
Cry (2000) Meet Thomas Jefferson, Napoleon, and Andrew Jackson in
this historical novel about the Louisiana Purchase.
Sheldon, Sidney. Best
Laid Plans (1997) Senator Todd Davis promises to make Oliver
Russell President of the United States if he agrees to marry daughter.
Leslie Stewart, Russell's fiancee and PR director, is not pleased.
Slotkin, Richard. Abe
(2000) Fictional biography of the young Abraham Lincoln's coming of
age. Abe loses his mother, journeys by flatboat down the Ohio and
Mississippi Rivers to New Orleans, befriends a slave named Sephus, and
forms many of the opinions that would later shape his Presidency.
Stone, Irving. Those
Who Love (1965) The love story of John and Abigail Adams, set
against the backdrop of the American Revolution.
Tarloff, Erik. Face
Time (1999) Speechwriter Ben Krause learns that his girlfriend
Gretchen is having an affair with the President; and she doesn't want to
break up with either of them.
Uris, Leon. A
God in Ruins (1999) Nearing Election Day 2008, Presidential
candidate Quinn Patrick O'Connell discovers he's not an Irish Catholic,
but is instead Jewish.
Vidal, Gore. Lincoln
(1984) Set during the Civil War, this historical novel provides a vivid
portrait of Lincoln as complex man and skillful politician.
Wilson, F. Paul. Deep
as the Marrow (1997) President Thomas Winston wants to legalize
drugs. While many support the idea, others do not -- Conservatives push for
impeachment, and the drug lords plot to assassinate the President.
