The Marin County Flood Control and Water Conservation
District was formed in 1955 by an Act of the State
Legislature found in Chapter 68 of the State Water Code.
The Board of Supervisors sits as Board of the District
and the District is staffed by the Department of Public
Works. The boundaries of the District are contiguous
with those of the County of Marin and eight "zones"
have been established to address specific watershed flooding
problems. Each zone has an "Advisory Board" of 5 or 7
residents, which are appointed by the Board of Supervisors.
These Boards review Zone budgets and master plans and advise
the Board on these matters.

The District maintains Real Time Precipitation and
Stream Gauges, publishes Creek Rating Tables (Stage - Discharge) and oversees the MCSTOPPP and
FEMA Flood Insurance programs.
The Department of Public Works has launched a new program in the Ross Valley/Corte Madera Creek watershed (Flood Zone 9) for flood control and creek stewardship using a watershed wide approach. Learn more at www.rossvalleywatershed.org.
